Representative Adam Schiff delivered a sharp criticism of Donald Trump’s supporters on the congressional floor, labeling them an “immoral majority” seeking to reinstate a president found guilty of felony charges related to hush payments.
In his speech, Schiff repeated “guilty” 34 times, once for each count of Trump’s conviction, which Republicans criticized as over-the-top.
“Guilty, guilty, guilty,” Schiff said.
“The party, formally of the moral majority, is now I suppose trying to fashion some kind of immoral majority to reinstate Donald Trump as president,” he said.
Schiff argued Republicans did not contest Trump’s guilt itself, but rather that he should not have faced prosecution or it been a misdemeanor.
With the midterm elections approaching and political tensions high post-conviction, Schiff forcefully pushed back against efforts to undo the legal consequences for Trump and the norms of accountability.
“My Republican colleagues don’t really contest Donald Trump’s guilt,” Schiff said. “This is the fascinating thing. Their argument is essentially he should never have been prosecuted. Or they falsely claim it was a political prosecution. Or they falsely claim it should have been a misdemeanor not a felony. But they don’t contest, not really, that Donald Trump was making hush money payments to a porn star to hide their affair from voters.”
He added, “What they’re really saying is they’re more than comfortable electing, nominating, and electing as the President of the United States someone making hush money payments to a porn star. The party formerly of the moral majority is now, I suppose, hoping to fashion some kind of immoral majority to reinstate Donald Trump as President.”
