Protesters against fossil fuels vandalized Stonehenge in the UK by spray-painting part of the monument with orange powder paint, demanding government action to end oil, gas, and coal usage by 2030.
The incident led to the arrest of two individuals by Wiltshire police, with ongoing investigations in collaboration with English Heritage, the organization overseeing Stonehenge.
The group responsible for the act, Just Stop Oil, identified the protesters and claimed the paint was cornflour-based and washable.
“They are demanding that the incoming UK government commit to working with other governments to agree an equitable plan to end the extraction and burning of oil, gas and coal by 2030,” the group stated.
“At around noon, we responded to a report that orange paint had been sprayed on some of the stones by two suspects,” Wiltshire police stated. “Officers attended the scene and arrested two people on suspicion of damaging the ancient monument.”
Police added, “Our enquiries are ongoing, and we are working closely with English Heritage.”
While the damage is being assessed, concerns remain about the impact of the vandalism on the historic site, with reactions from public figures denouncing the actions.
“Orange powdered paint has been thrown at a number of the stones at Stonehenge. Obviously, this is extremely upsetting and our curators are investigating the extent of the damage,” a Stonehenge X account posted. “More updates to follow but the site remains open.”
BBC correspondent Paul Clifton wrote that he “heard a suggestion that because it is powder paint and the weather is dry and sunny, it may perhaps be removed without lasting damage, but they will need experts to inspect the stone before forming an opinion.”
“Just Stop Oil are a disgrace,” U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wrote on X.
