Calls for President Biden to step down following a poor debate performance have sparked potential intraparty discord within the Democratic Party.
Speculation surrounds Vice President Kamala Harris inheriting Biden’s campaign and its finances should he withdraw.
The $91.2 million in campaign funds would transfer to Harris if she becomes the replacement candidate.
However, uncertainties arise if Harris remains in the vice presidential role or if a different candidate is selected.
Experts suggest various outcomes for the campaign funds, including transfer to the national Democratic Party or charitable organizations.
“This has this unique twist to it with Harris still being a part of the campaign and being considered part of the campaign from the get-go,” Kenneth Gross of the Federal Election Commission said.
With the election approaching, decisions regarding Biden’s candidacy and the campaign’s financial resources must be made promptly.
