President Joe Biden faces challenges as leaked Democratic polling data shows a decline in support, with battleground and traditionally blue states indicating losses to former President Donald Trump.
The OpenLabs poll reveals decreasing voter confidence in Biden, with significant deficits in key states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, Georgia, Arizona, and Nevada.
“This is, of course, only a single poll, conducted during the initial aftershocks of the debate. It will take a few weeks to determine if Biden’s slippage in the polls is a trend and not a blip,” CNN correspondent Peter Hamby wrote.
“But given their reputation inside the party and connections to Future Forward, OpenLabs is a firm that Democratic campaigns take seriously.”
“In the tipping-point state of Pennsylvania, Biden now trails by 7 points, compared to 5 points before the debate,” Hamby wrote. “He has also dropped in Michigan, where he now trails Trump by 7. OpenLabs also found that he is now losing by roughly 10 points in Georgia and Arizona, and by almost 9 points in Nevada.”
“Biden is now only winning by a fraction of a point in Virginia, Maine, Minnesota, and New Mexico — and he’s now only winning Colorado by around 2 points,” he wrote.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed concerns over Biden’s debate performance potentially impacting electoral votes in her state, but has refuted claims of suggesting he couldn’t win Michigan.
Reports also suggest Biden’s lack of preparation for debates and instances of confusion in public appearances have raised questions about his cognitive sharpness, with concerns about his ability to articulate effectively and maintain focus.
“These are people, several of them who are very close to President Biden who loved him, have supported him and among them are some people who would raise a lot of money for him. And they are adamant that what we saw the other night, the Joe Biden we saw, is not a one-off, that there have been 15, 20 occasions in the last year and a half when the president has appeared somewhat as he did in that horror show that we witnessed,” CNN’s Carl Bernstein said.
