Vice President Kamala Harris is poised to receive the Democratic nomination for president following President Joe Biden’s decision to exit the race amid public criticism regarding his age and mental acuity.
In the aftermath of Biden’s announcement, Harris raised $81 million in just 24 hours, suggesting strong support for her campaign.
Despite previously defending Biden against inquiries about his age and mental fitness—labeling concerns as politically motivated—she quickly embraced a potential candidacy.
“The way that the President’s demeanor in that report was characterized could not be more wrong on the facts, and clearly politically motivated,” Harris said February of 2024.
“I spent a whole lot of time with our President, be it in the Oval Office or the Situation Room and in other places, and I can tell you … not only is he absolutely authoritative in rooms around the globe, but in the Oval Office meeting with members of Congress, meeting with leaders of industry, meeting with community leaders. I will tell you that he is in front of, often, everyone in the room in terms of thinking about how we can resolve issues,” Harris said.
Harris has publicly endorsed Biden’s capabilities and performance over his presidency, while also absorbing his campaign resources and gaining endorsements from key Democratic figures, including Nancy Pelosi, as she prepares to launch her own campaign.
“He is extraordinarily smart. He has the ability to see around the corner in terms of what might be the challenges we face as a nation,” she said.
“Anderson, the point has to be performance in terms of what a president does … I got the point that you’re making about a one-and-a-half hour debate tonight. I’m talking about three-and-a-half years of performance in work that has been historic,” Harris said.
“The person I see in the Oval Office who is meeting with heads of the military and the intelligence community. And in the situation room ensuring the safety of America, the person I see in Joe Biden on the world stage convening world leaders who often ask for his advice, most recently just during the G7 conference. So I’m not going to spend all night with you talking about the last 90 minutes when I’ve been watching the last three and a half years of performance,” she said.
