LeBron James has been selected as the flag bearer for the U.S. at the 2024 Paris Olympics, making him the first U.S. men’s basketball player to receive this honor.
Nominated by fellow NBA star Steph Curry, James expressed pride in representing the United States on a global stage.
“It’s an incredible honor to represent the United States on this global stage, especially in a moment that can bring the whole world together,” James wrote.
“For a kid from Akron, this responsibility means everything to not only myself but to my family, all the kids in my hometown, my teammates, fellow Olympians, and so many people across the country with big aspirations. Sports have the power to bring us all together, and I’m proud to be a part of this important moment.”
This will mark James’s fourth appearance on the U.S. Olympic basketball team, having previously won a bronze and two gold medals.
However, his selection has drawn criticism due to his strong ties to China and past comments defending the country’s actions, including rebuking fellow athletes and executives who criticized China’s human rights record.
Despite his substantial earnings in the U.S., James has been vocal about his criticisms of the country, leading to public disputes over his political statements.
