President Joe Biden expressed doubts about Vice President Kamala Harris’s ability to defeat former President Donald Trump before announcing his intention to step aside from the 2024 presidential race.
The concern highlights a lack of unity within the Democratic Party compared to the Republicans.
After his announcement, Biden quickly endorsed Harris on social media, prompting several party leaders, including notable figures like Bill and Hillary Clinton, to rally around her.
However, key leaders such as Nancy Pelosi, Hakeem Jeffries, Chuck Schumer, and Barack Obama have withheld their endorsements to avoid appearing to orchestrate a “coronation” for Harris.
“We will be navigating uncharted waters in the days ahead,” Obama said. “But I have extraordinary confidence that the leaders of our party will be able to create a process from which an outstanding nominee emerges.”
The Democratic Party is cautious about perceptions of undermining democracy by removing Biden from the ticket, as he won a significant number of primary votes in 2020.
Harris, though the frontrunner for the nomination, has a low approval rating of 38.6 percent, comparable to Biden’s 38.5 percent, raising concerns about her electability.
Other potential contenders for the Democratic nomination include various governors and senators.
