Ryan Routh was recently charged with attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump at his golf course in West Palm Beach. Routh’s case will now be overseen by U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon.
Cannon, nominated by Trump and confirmed in 2020, previously practiced law and worked as an Assistant U.S. Attorney. Cannon has handled high-profile cases involving Trump, drawing media attention and controversy over her rulings on national security issues.
“The attempted assassination on the former president is a heinous act,” U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland stated.
“I am grateful that he is safe, and as I said immediately after the event, the Justice Department will spare no resource to ensure accountability,” Garland added.
Routh, 58, was arrested after a Secret Service team intercepted him when a rifle barrel was spotted near the course.
He faces charges, including attempted assassination, which could result in a life sentence.
In addition to the attempted assassination charge, Routh is also facing illegal firearms charges and accusations of assaulting a Secret Service agent.
Routh had previously tried to recruit soldiers to fight in Ukraine and expressed a desire to kill Trump, offering a bounty for someone to do so.
