Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan recently expressed regret over a viral video in which she fed a Dorito to abortion advocate Liz Plank. The clip faced backlash for its suggestive nature and perceived mockery of Catholic traditions.
Whitmer clarified that the video was intended to promote the CHIPS Act, aimed at boosting Michigan jobs and reducing reliance on foreign suppliers. She emphasized her respect for personal religious beliefs and stated that the video’s message was misinterpreted.
“Over 25 years in public service, I would never do something to denigrate someone’s faith,” Whitmer said.
“I’ve used my platform to stand up for people’s right to hold and practice their personal religious beliefs. My team has spoken to the Michigan Catholic Conference,” Whitmer added.
“What was supposed to be a video about the importance of the CHIPS Act to Michigan jobs, has been construed as something it was never intended to be, and I apologize for that,” Whitmer said.
“Chips aren’t just delicious, the CHIPS Act is a game-changer for U.S. tech and manufacturing, boosting domestic production of semiconductors to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers! Donald Trump would put that at risk,” the original caption read.
During an interview with Plank, Whitmer addressed a controversial question regarding “post-birth abortion,” asserting that it does not exist.
“You have two daughters. When they come back home and they leave their Stanley Cups lying around, do you ever think about getting a post-birth abortion?” Plank asked Whitmer.
“Thank you for raising that because there’s no such thing. So I think it’s really important for us to make sure people understand that,” Whitmer said, laughing.
