Recently uncovered messages show that former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) engaged in discussions with Cassidy Hutchinson, an important witness for the House January 6 Select Committee, without notifying Hutchinson’s lawyer.
Cheney initially communicated through ex-Trump communications director Alyssa Farah Griffin before speaking directly to Hutchinson.
“Cheney interacted with the witness, former Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson, through ex-Trump strategic communications director Alyssa Farah Griffin — and later directly — in an effort to compel further testimony,” one report noted.
“Though she worked behind the scenes to obtain Hutchinson’s juiciest allegations in 2022, some of which were later found to be false, Cheney never mentioned the backchannel talks with Hutchinson or Griffin in her book ‘Oath and Honor’ about the riot,” the report added.
“Her one concern was so long ad [sic] you have counsel, she can’t really ethically talk to you without him,” Griffin had texted.
“Hi, this is Cassidy Hutchinson. I’m sorry for reaching out this way, but I was hoping to have a private conversation with you (soon) if you are willing,” Hutchinson texted Cheney.
“I would be happy to. Let me know what time works for you,” Cheney wrote.
“I’m free all day for a call or in-person, whichever you prefer. I really, really appreciate this,” Cheney later wrote.
Despite actively seeking Hutchinson’s testimony, some of Hutchinson’s claims were later found to be false, and Cheney failed to disclose these communications in her book, “Oath and Honor.”
The oversight subcommittee criticized Cheney for potentially using Hutchinson’s attorney as a scapegoat for inconsistencies in Hutchinson’s statements.
Testimony from Secret Service agents contradicted Hutchinson’s claims about Trump’s actions on January 6.
