The Subcommittee on Oversight of the House Administration Committee has requested that the Justice Department look into former Rep. Liz Cheney for purportedly interfering with a witness, Cassidy Hutchinson, during her time as vice chair of the January 6 committee. The committee’s report claims Cheney secretly communicated with Hutchinson via the encrypted Signal app to coach her testimony without legal representation present.
This conduct is seen as a violation of investigative rules and has prompted the committee to flag the issue for further investigation, despite skepticism about whether the Justice Department will act on it.
Key findings of Chairman Barry Loudermilk’s report raised concerns of Cheney’s potential witness tampering. The report claimed that Hutchinson’s allegations lacked evidence and that the Select Committee was aware of this when promoting her testimony.
The report criticized the January 6 Select Committee for being improperly constituted and for withholding evidence in its Final Report. It also states that the Department of Defense mismanaged the response to the Capitol incident, scapegoating the D.C. National Guard.
Additionally, the Subcommittee found failures by the FBI and Capitol Police in investigating the construction of fake gallows on Capitol grounds.
The report highlighted a series of intelligence and leadership failures leading to the events of January 6.
