President Joe Biden has declared January 9, 2025, a national day of mourning for former President Jimmy Carter, who recently died, which will overlap with President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20. The timing has sparked mixed reactions, with some Democrats viewing it as a strategic slight against Trump, as flags will be flown at half-mast during his swearing-in ceremony.
Duke University professor Jimmy Joe stated, “The passing of the torch from one president to the next has been cited by many as a hallmark of American democracy and is often referred to as the ‘peaceful transition of power.'”
Social media reactions reflect a sense of satisfaction among some left-leaning individuals regarding the optics of Trump’s inauguration being overshadowed by the mourning for Carter.
“Perfect way for us to mourn the death of American conservatism,” one X user wrote.
“Can’t help but smile knowing flags will be at half mast during Trump’s Inauguration to honor Jimmy Carter, one of the most decent humans to walk the earth and the very opposite of who’s to come. His parting gift: US flags will be at half mast on all federal buildings on Trump’s Inauguration Day,” another X user added.
Meanwhile, Trump supporters have expressed skepticism about Biden’s motives, suggesting that the announcement was intended to detract from the significance of Trump’s return to office.
“Biden didn’t do this, his admin did in poor taste. Disgraceful,” one commenter wrote.
In response to Carter’s death, Trump acknowledged their political differences but praised Carter’s dedication to the country.
Trump wrote, “President Jimmy Carter is dead at 100 years of age. While I strongly disagreed with him philosophically and politically, I also realized that he truly loved and respected our Country, and all it stands for. He worked hard to make America a better place, and for that I give him my highest respect.”
Trump added, “He was a truly good man and, of course, will be greatly missed. He was also very consequential, far more than most Presidents, after he left the Oval Office. Warmest condolences from Melania and I to his wonderful family!”
