Walter Ringfield, a 27-year-old temporary worker, was arrested for stealing a security fob and keys from the Maricopa County Tabulation and Election Center.
The theft, captured on surveillance cameras, has led to the costly reprogramming of security equipment ahead of the July primary election.
Ringfield, denied bond due to prior felony probation, claimed innocence initially but was found with some keys in his vehicle.
The missing fob poses a security risk, necessitating the $20,000 reprogramming cost.
“On the desk there was a red scrunchy wrist lanyard with a security fob and keys attached,” the probable cause statement read.
“A director at the facility stated that the estimated cost of the reprogramming would be greater than $19,000 dollars, and the secure operation of the facility is greatly impeded until the reprogramming is complete,” the report added.
The incident has shed light on election security concerns, impacting the facility’s operations as authorities work to address the breach and ensure the integrity of the electoral process in Maricopa County.
