The PGA Tour’s Travelers Championship devolved into chaos on the 18th hole Sunday when climate protesters stormed the green just as world number one golfer Scottie Scheffler was set to put for the win.
Just as Scheffler was attempting to put from the edge of the green for a historic sixth win of the season, at least five protesters rushed the green. The protesters proceeded to throw smoke bombs and powdery substances onto the course as police attempted to apprehend them.
“Approximately 50 Connecticut-based climate activists marched alongside the TPC River Highlands golf course today, with banners and signs that called on Travelers Insurance to end their insurance coverage of the fossil fuel industry,” climate activist group Insure Our Future wrote.

Once the protesters were handcuffed and escorted off, the crowd erupted into cheers and chants of “[expletive, [expletive].”
“Travelers is one of the largest oil and gas insurers in the world and has over $3.5 billion invested in fossil fuel companies. The Travelers must catch up with other leading insurers and make meaningful commitments to end underwriting and investing in climate-destroying fossil fuel projects and companies,” Sierra Club organizer Ann Gadwah wrote.
