North Korean leader Kim Jong Un launched over 150 balloons filled with trash, propaganda, and excrement into South Korea as a retaliatory move after South Korean activists sent anti-North Korean leaflets and USB drives to the North.
The incident raised concerns about regional stability, with South Korea’s joint chiefs of staff condemning North Korea’s actions as a violation of international law.
“The balloons appeared to have carried various kinds of waste, including plastic bottles, batteries, shoe parts, and even manure,” one report read. “Military officials are currently collecting the debris for detailed analysis.”
“These acts by North Korea clearly violate international law and seriously threaten our people’s safety,” South Korea’s joint chiefs of staff said.
“We sternly warn North Korea to cease its inhumane and vulgar actions immediately.”
CNN anchor Julia Chatterley appeared shocked while discussing the event in May of 2024.
The bizarre event has shed light on the ongoing tensions between the two countries, with North Korea warning of further retaliation.
“Mounds of wastepaper and filth will soon be scattered over the border areas and the interior of the Republic of Korea, and it will directly experience how much effort is required to remove them,” North Korea’s defense minister Kim Kang-il stated.
