NBA player Jonathan Isaac, known for standing during the National Anthem in opposition to kneeling, has signed a significant $84 million contract extension with the Orlando Magic, extending his tenure until 2029.
The renewal, reflecting Isaac’s on-court performance, signifies a departure from the league’s heightened activism following George Floyd’s death in 2020.
Isaac’s stance on patriotism and individual solutions during a time of racial reckoning has showcased his principled approach, amidst pressure for players to engage in social issues.
Additionally, Isaac has expressed criticism towards certain NBA figures and has ventured into launching his own athletic apparel brand centered on Christian values.
“For me, that was kind of the highlight of my early career of being in the NBA, was 2020. It was after the tragic death of George Floyd, and we were ushered into the NBA ‘bubble,’ where there was just so much pressure,” Isaac said. Not even just in the bubble, but just around the world with the rise of the Black Lives Matter organization and movement.”
“For me, it was simply about offering another solution. I saw the issue. I saw the problem. I saw what happened to George Floyd. And as I listened to the tone and the rhetoric of the Black Lives Matter organization and movement, I never truly felt comfortable,” he added.
