Vice President Kamala Harris has faced scrutiny regarding her views on gun control, particularly in light of her recent comments during a town hall moderated by Oprah Winfrey. During the event, Harris made an offhand remark about shooting an intruder in her home, stating, “If somebody breaks in my house, they’re getting shot.”
The comment elicited nervous laughter from the audience, and she later said, “I probably should not have said that. My staff will deal with that later.”
The clip of her remark has since garnered millions of views online, prompting numerous debates over her stance on gun control.
President Biden recently appointed Harris to lead the newly established White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, which has drawn increased attention to her perspectives on firearms regulation.
In the past, Harris has expressed support for policies such as Australian-style gun confiscation, which has raised significant concerns among gun rights advocates.
Earlier statements from Harris have also resurfaced, including a 2007 press conference in which she said, “Just because you legally possess a gun in the sanctity of your locked home doesn’t mean that we’re not going to walk into that home and check to see if you’re being responsible.”
The statement has been interpreted by some as a potential infringement on both the Second and Fourth Amendments.
Harris has also previously advocated for a mandatory gun buyback program, a proposal that has been viewed by critics as government overreach, given that the government does not originally own the firearms in question.
“This is openly totalitarian. If we don’t resist this, we’re done,” conservative commentator Tucker Carlson said.
Harris’ communication style has often been characterized as vague, leading to varying interpretations of her positions.
During the recent presidential debate, Harris claimed to support gun rights and noted that she owned a firearm.
The statement raised questions among observers, particularly in light of her previous advocacy for stricter gun control measures. Former Congressman Ron Paul commented on the debate performance, arguing that Harris is a “slick” liar.
“I think Kamala — I have to admit, she surprised me. I thought she was a much slicker liar than I realized, but she could tell lies pretty — pretty well,” Paul said. “But I think when you decide to dissect it out — you know, even if she’s stating a truth, it doesn’t reveal that’s what she really believes. You know, they’ve been trained in that. Most politicians have been trained to do this and mislead people.”
